Clik here to view.Did you know that it can take as little as seven seconds to make a strong first impression? With that in mind, it’s a reality – what you wear and how you present yourself during a job interview can actually set the tone before you open your mouth – so why not dress to impress?
I totally get it can be a challenge to express your personality while dressing appropriately for the workplace – but it can be done. Some of the best dressed individuals I know are my current colleagues. Based on my observations over the years in combination with my own hits and misses, I’ve compiled a few practical tips. Here’s how to help ensure what you wear is not a source of stress in advance of your next career opportunity.

The easiest way to look chic with a touch of personality is to go monochromatic. I’m not talking black on black – try grey or navy to switch things up. The key in going monochromatic is to mix textures. The above photo is a great example – a textured knit with a felt finish skirt and suede pumps. Start with a skirt in a solid colour featuring details like an interesting cut and build your outfit around it.

Another way to make a statement is with a ‘power’ blazer. When you feel good in something, it’ll show and having a comfortable, unexpected blazer is a simple way to add some confidence to your overall look. Try a slimming, longer cut in a solid colour (like white) or with a subtle pattern – like this jacket from Scotch & Soda. Paired with a sheath dress or a blouse and straight tailored trousers, you’ll look like you mean business.

Shoes can be underestimated but they play an important role in polishing off a look and provide an added opportunity for self-expression. For the purposes of a job interview – first and foremost, ensure you choose footwear that you can comfortably walk in. Aside from that, don’t be afraid to have a little fun. My go-to print is leopard and these new sling backs from ZARA are a prime example of classic black and white with a twist.
