When it comes to dressing casual – jeans are my go-to. Even when I come home from a long day at work or on the weekends….when others resort to sweats or leggings, I tend to jean it up. I was probably the happiest person alive when denim on denim made a comeback – long live the Canadian tuxedo!
As of late, I’ve tried to extend my casual pant alternatives beyond denim. Here are some options I’ve tried, and how I’d recommend wearing them.
Cotton Cigarette Trousers, $59.90 CAD, ZARA
Cigarette trousers… Cigarette tailored pants are a fashion classic and they look great paired with a heel (slim or chunky). Oftentimes they sit higher on the waist so try pairing them with a cropped sweater or t-shirt for something different. Since they are fitted, they also look sharp with a longer billowy top, like a tank in a silk finish. This pair from ZARA is right on trend.
Imitation Leather Joggers, $39.95 CAD, H&M
Leather trousers… After Christmas,I stumbled upon a pair of faux-leather trousers at ZARA, on-sale for $22. While we’re still in January, they’ve been my best purchase so far this year. Unfortunately, they have since sold out, but there’s a similar pair at H&M. These pants are great for going out or for casual Friday at work. Look for a pair with seaming at the knees and a back pocket. Try pairing them with a fitted cotton shirt tucked in layered with a chunky cardigan, or a denim shirt.
TNA Durant Pant, $39.99 CAD (on sale), Aritzia
Modern day oggers… As mentioned, I’m not a big fan of sweatpants, but luxe joggers, I can get used to. A classic olive green tone is a safe bet as it can be mixed and matched with a variety of colours. Pair these bad boys with casual sneakers and a graphic tee. As someone with a short torso, I find that fully tucking in my shirt on an elastic waistline can make me look disproportionate. An easy trick I use is a half-tuck; try tucking in the right side of your shirt and let it gradually become un-tucked on the left (a soft angle).
FK Fit Run the World Leggings, $165.51 CAD, ShopBop
Athletic leggings… Pre or post-workout,the old me would wear jeans…not the most practical. With so many advancements in athletic wear appeal, fashionable tights are the way to go. While I’m still not able to fully embrace athletic gear casually from head-to-toe, I do like to mix and match with daily wear like an oversized turtleneck or a graphic tee and a vest. This pair from ShopBop is a splurge but have such a nice print.
