Fall and winter weather means it’s time to do-away with sneakers, flats, and pumps (at least when outdoors) – it’s time to trade-up to boots. This year, there is a ton of selection in terms of boots. I have built up quite the collection over the past year that includes a variety of heights, colours, finishes, and heel type – all serving their own, needed purpose.
Since the selection can be overwhelming, and it’s not realistic to build a new boot collection in one season, it’s helpful to keep a few different buying tips in mind.
Calves… One of the most common challenges when purchasing boots is muscular calves. Instead of focusing on boots that don’t fit (and trying to squeeze into them), put your energy towards options that are more likely to fit. Look for tall boots that have features such as elastic backs, slip-on, or lace-up for added flexibility and stretch. You can also opt for an ankle boot.
Length… As the illusion of longer legs is always welcome, consider the following. The obvious point is heel height – as a boot gets higher, your legs will appear longer. Just make sure the height is something you’re comfortable walking in or you may actually hinder the elongated effect. Another tip is to wear monochromatic tones – pairing black ankle boots with black tights will make your legs look endless – this works for other colours as well, as long as the tones match.
Boot Height… A general rule of thumb is the higher the rise of the boot, the shorter your skirt or dress should be (to balance everything out). It’s ideal to have one pair of to-the-knee or over-the-knee boots, with a couple different ankle boot variations – one with a higher heel, dressier look and feel, and two more casual options – black and something neutral.
