Being able to artfully layer your outfit requires skills and mastery. I surveyed some of the team on their best layering practices. Looks like a scarf and a mash up of textures is part of the formula for layering success!
Courtney… The trick to wearing layers is mixing up both different styles (boho, edgy, feminine) and different textures. In the fall I like to layer up but aim to keep a slim silhouette so I don’t look overwhelmed in my clothes! My favourite layering pieces are a big scarf and a leather jacket. Right now I’m particularly into American Apparel’s circle scarf (which can be worn a variety of ways).
Leah… I like to add depth to a layered look with additional unexpected elements. For example, if I’m layering a scarf over a top or dress, I like to add in a long necklace to peek out. Or if I’m wearing a casual dress with tights and booties, I like to add in socks to peek out the top of the boot or tie a sweater around my waist. I also like to add texture to a layered look by mixing different materials and finishes, especially if layering in the same colour tone.
Caitlyn… When I’m playing with layered looks I love mixing different textures and accessories to take my look to the next level. I wear a lot of leather and knits which can be combined in so many ways and I make sure to throw on a faux fur vest or bundle up in a scarf and hat. I also love playing with proportions and lines with different hems and silhouettes, which creates fluidity to a look. Don’t forget jewellery, I also play with layering different length necklaces to add more interest.
Jan… Texture is a ‘must’ to score a home run in the layering game. Layered pieces should contrast in texture to create balance and add interest and variety. Mix silks with knits, leather or tweed, add a chunky scarf, or throw a faux fur or fluffy vest over a silk or knit top. Contrasting colours also accentuate your layered look but keep colours neutral and patterns to a minimum so your outfit looks neat and well put together.
