layering necklacesI have to admit, when it came to tackling the art of necklace layering, I was a bit lost. My initial attempts at this mysterious art form resulted in tangled, not-so-pretty messes. In my desire to master the skill, I spent time researching the tricks of the trade and discovered several techniques that allowed me to finally layer necklaces like a pro. If you’re anything like me and necklace layering has been throwing you for a loop, check out my tried-and-tested tips to learn how to create your own eye-catching layered looks with ease.

Hang Your Necklaces

One of the greatest aspects of necklace layering is the ability to create personal statements with the contents of your jewellery box. However, before you go throwing any necklace arrangement around you neck, it is good to take an inventory of what you have. An easy way to accomplish this is to hang your necklace collection on the wall using either hooks or nails. This tactic helps to decipher which necklaces have the appropriate lengths to be layered together.

It’s All About Spacing

Necklace Length ChartThe key to necklace layering is to create the proper spacing; otherwise, your necklaces will look cluttered and tangled. I personally like symmetrical spacing (ex. – 14 inches, 16 inches, 18 inches, etc.) but I’d suggest playing around with different lengths to discover which combo is your favourite. During my research, I came across this handy-dandy chart that can help you better understand the differences in necklace lengths.

Get Inspired

To get the creative juices flowing, I would suggest trolling online (especially Pinterest) for some necklace layering ideas. If you’re a visual person like me, I find this tactic really helpful in order to get inspired.

Shortest Necklace First

Now that you’ve taken an inventory of your jewellery collection, understand necklace lengths, and have found some inspiration on Pinterest, you can start putting your creation together! The first step in the process is to select your shortest piece first. Your second piece should be an inch or two longer but can be dropped down several more inches if you’re filling in a deep neckline. For the longest piece, I would suggest going with something that is a bit bolder such as a pendant as it will frame the other necklaces in your creation nicely.

Use An Extender

To avoid getting your necklaces tangled and twisted together, use a removable extender. An extender will help to keep your necklaces neat, in place, and will also help to add an extra bit of length. If you don’t know where to buy one, here’s an option available at Hudson’s Bay.
