How To Build A Wardrobe Capsule Collection

closet1Last week, I went into details and tips for cleaning out your closet and starting off 2016 on the right foot, wardrobe wise. This was intended as a part one to my post today – how to build a capsule collection!

I’ve been thinking about trying a capsule collection for quite some time now. I’m currently in the start up phase of my business and don’t have the budget for the bi-weekly shopping trips that I used to. Aside from budgetary reasons though, I honestly believe my style will improve and mornings will be easier, because everything will go together and I will have pieces that I LOVE, not just like.

That being said, I invite you to join me! I’ve pulled together some research, and here is my plan:

Step 1

Closet cleanse – eliminate anything that doesn’t fit you to a T, and store your seasonal clothes to get them out of the way. This capsule collection is meant to last for two to three months. You should be left with your absolute favourite, seasonally appropriate clothes.

(Try to keep your faves under 60 pieces, including shoes!)

Step 2

Make outfits, and eliminate pieces that aren’t versatile enough to match multiple pieces. On the other hand, you might come across new pairings that you never thought of before!

Here are some good rules of thumb for numbers, to help you reach your goal. However, if you can’t get it down to this, that’s okay too! This exercise is to curate your wardrobe, not to force you to get rid of things you love.

  • 10 shoes (Booties, flats, sneakers, heels)
  • 10 bottoms (denim, trousers, skirts)
  • 12 tops (tees, button ups, etc.)
  • 5 sweaters/mid-layers
  • 1 Vest
  • 5 Jackets (leather, parka, dressy)
  • 2 Dresses

If you’re not comfortable getting rid of pieces that didn’t make the capsule, pack them up in a box and put them in storage – they’ll be there if you need them!

Step 3

Fill in the gaps. Missing some pieces? This is a good time to invest in a great trouser, sweater, or coat (and they’ll likely be on sale too).

Ready, set, go!

Here are some pieces that I am keeping in my capsule collection:
