While most of us are tucking our boho looks back into the closet until next year’s Coachella, there’s one distinctly boho-chic look that’s perfect for fall: ponchos and capes. Now I know what you’re thinking – ponchos are great when they’re worn well…but how does the average girl pull that off? While all that fabric can be a little intimidating, ponchos and capes are warm, cozy and ridiculously comfortable – plus not nearly as difficult to wear as their reputation implies! Here are a few tips and tricks to pulling off capes and ponchos.

  1. If you’re not ready to go bold, stick to solid colors or simple prints – when a poncho or cape is worn in black or grey the statement piece is drapey and chic without drawing tons of attention to your look.
  1. Stick with a streamlined look from the waist down. Skinny jeans with boots are a safe, yet fashion forward combination to pair with a poncho or cape.
  1. Try layering up with a long sleeved shirt in a neutral color under a more fitted poncho or cape to stay warm without looking lost by fabric.
  1. Go preppy by pairing your poncho or cape with a collared shirt – it instantly pulls together the outfit and tones down the bohemian look.
  1. Opt for a longer poncho that you can wear with leggings or a dress for a cute, carefree look. Extra points if they’re leather-look leggings!
