Post-holidays, temperatures have dropped across the country….I hate to admit it, but winter is here. This year, I’ve decided to embrace the Canadian winter wholeheartedly. I figure, if I approach the cold with positive anticipation, I’ll be able to one-up an otherwise unpredictable, drawn-out season.

One does not have to sacrifice their sense of style in dressing for the cold. Even when temperatures drop below -15°C – you just need to get a little more creative. Here are my top four tips for staying stylish and warm this winter. And to the cold – I say, “Bring it on!”

Learn To Layer… Layers are your friend – learn the art of layering and embrace it. Start with your thinnest layers and work your way out to thicker, chunkier layers. Try something unexpected like a thin, striped turtleneck layered under a solid colour knitted turtleneck. The under layer will peep out at the neck, and at the wrists. If you’re wearing a knit, try layering on a denim jacket, with a wool coat.

Invest In Accessories… A hat, scarf, and mitts are cold weather staples – so why not find some that are both fashionable and functional. For a hat – I’d recommend a solid, rich colour in a warm fabric – something simple that can be dressed up or dressed down. I purchased the Babaton Dennis Hat from Aritzia this year and love it. It’s a wool/cashmere combo and it comes in a bunch of great colours. I would recommend the Wilfred blanket scarves to anyone looking for a warm, practical scarf. While they are not warm enough on their own, it’s super easy to pair them with thick, woolly socks. With pants tucked into your boots – you’ll never notice. If you’re wearing them with tights, pair them with thick ankle socks. Jeffrey Campbell Stormy Rain Booties, $67.83 CAD, Shopbop.com

Shades are also necessary for blocking the sun’s glare, as well as helping with visibility when it’s stormy. F0289 Matte Wayfarer Sunglasses, $6.80 CAD, Forever 21
