How To Wear Over The Knee Boots

overthekneeIt looks like over the knee boots are here to stay, so I figured we should chat about how to wear them. Thigh high boots can definitely be tricky to pull off; they can tip very quickly into skanky territory, and thus proportions are key.

It’s all about balance with this newly deemed fall staple; if you’re going to wear a skirt or dress, either wear tights and pair it with a chunky sweater or make sure to only show a tiny bit of leg and be sure that you have a high-ish neckline and long sleeves. Basically you just want to be sure to have your upper body covered up when your lower half is a bit more exposed, which doesn’t only apply to over the knee boots but anytime that you’re showing off your gams. Unless you’re heading out for a crazy bachelorette party in Vegas in which case all bets are off! Another thing to keep in mind is whether your boots are flat or heeled; you can get away with showing a bit more leg if your boots are flat.

overtheknee3My favourite way to wear over the knee boots is with denim. The boots can make even the most basic outfit look instantly on trend. Wear a blazer for a more polished look, or a nice slouchy sweater for a ‘model off duty’ style. Leggings (make sure they’re thick) are also great with over the knee boots, especially if your boots are black; the monochromatic hues help to elongate your leg. A good rule of thumb actually is to wear dark bottoms (jeans or pants) with your over the knee boots otherwise the boots can visually cut you off at your thigh and make you look stumpy, which I’m pretty sure isn’t what you are going for!

If you’re thinking that only statuesque models can pull off this style, think again. The key is to try on many pairs until you find a fit and style that is flattering to you. If you’re on the shorter side (like me!) then a heeled pair might be best for you. That being said, if your legs are especially short and the boots just don’t seem to be working for you…don’t force it. Sometimes it’s smart to just sit out a trend if you don’t feel comfortable. That’s called knowing your style and what suits you! But if you do really want to try it out, then be patient and spend time until you find the right pair. I have a feeling they are out there!
