By now, we all know that we need to have at least one little black dress (or LBD) in our closet. We’ve heard them praised and worshipped for decades and have know all about the simplistic power of the ever perfect little black dress. But how are we supposed to know which one(s) to own? Surely a single dress can’t actually work for every occasion, from work to a party to church to a wedding? I decided to do a little research and figure out once and for all which type of LBD we need, and where we can wear it to. I’ve also sussed out the chicest options currently available in the shops. Read on for my tips…

Longer Sleeved… My favourite style of dress is the wrap dress (I’ve written about it before on many occasions) and it doesn’t get much better or more versatile than one in classic black. A great wrap dress should have a functioning wrap for an adjustable look, a semi-lowcut neckline and should hit at the middle of your knees. This type of dress works equally well for work or play, which is what makes it such a hardworking piece. I like to wear mine with a furry vest, opaque black tights and black boots during winter, and with metallic sandals and a pretty clutch for summer and early fall nights out.

Sheath… A classic black sheath dress is probably the most practical, hardworking piece of clothing that you can have in your closet. Look for one that is tailored (but not “body-con” which is really just code for super tight), has a modest neckline and is at least knee length. This dress truly is a multi-tasker; wear it with a blazer or a pretty cardigan to work, with a pair of gorgeous sparkly earrings and fun heels for a wedding, or a great pearl necklace for a super chic Audrey Hepburn inspired outfit. If you don’t have an incredibly flattering little black sheath dress, get on it! The key is to take your time and try on quite a few to be sure that you feel not only beautiful in it, but comfortable. This is also something you may want to splurge on a little as it will get a ton of use.

Special… The third type of LBD that helps to complete a wardrobe is one that’s a little bit special. Whether that means it has a scalloped hem, a jeweled neckline, or an interesting texture is up to you. This dress should be your go-to when you need a fast party look and shouldn’t require much, or really any, accessorizing. A tip is to be sure that it’s done in a seasonless fabric like stretch jersey so that you can wear it all year round. I own a really gorgeous cap sleeved dress that was a major splurge but unfortunately the fabric really only works for the holidays, so it sits sadly in my closet and waits to be pulled out come December. I do love it so I can’t really call it a mistake, but I wish it could be worn more often!
